The Great Forge

Your gear grows with you. At the Great Forge you can raise weapons and armor through five tiers, set Ad'rath Shards into their sockets, and change how they look. Walk up to a Great Forge and press F to open it.

Five tiers

Every forgeable weapon and piece of armor has five tiers. Tier 1 is the item as it was crafted or found. Each upgrade raises it by one tier, giving it better stats and more sockets.

Tier 1CraftedNo sockets
Tier 2Reinforced1 socket
Tier 3Enhanced1 socket
Tier 4Superior2 sockets
Tier 5Masterwork3 sockets

The name added to your item depends on its kind. A plate helm becomes Reinforced, then Enhanced, Superior and Masterwork. Leather and cloth use their own words, such as Cured, Hardened and Infused, and weapons use words such as Sharpened and Tempered. Every kind ends in Masterwork.

Good to know: forging never changes the way an item looks. Use the Appearance tab for that.

Upgrading

The cost

Each upgrade costs gold from your bank and crafting materials that suit the item: bars for plate, leather for leather armor, cloth for robes. The higher tiers ask for rarer materials.

Never lost

Upgrades never fail and never destroy your item. If you can pay for it and you're high enough level, it works.

Level matters

Higher tiers raise the level and the stats you need to wear or wield the item. Read the item's tooltip before you upgrade.

Stored on the item

Tier, shards and looks live on the item itself. They stay with it when you trade it, keep it in a chest, or pick it up from your gravestone.

Ad'rath Shards

When the Ad'rath Meteor broke apart, its fragments fell across the world and each one took on the element of the Sanctum nearest to where it landed. These Ad'rath Shards are now the heart of gear refinement: set one into a socket and its power becomes part of your item.

The same shard does a different job depending on where you set it. In a weapon it gives its weapon bonus, and in armor it gives its armor bonus.

Where to find them

Shards are dropped by creatures, mostly in the lands around each element's Sanctum. Chipped shards fall from most hostile creatures, and Pure shards come from elites and bosses. You can also earn a Chipped shard from some Notice Board kill quests.

Tip: a socketed shard isn't gone for good. Taking one out, and fusing three shards of one kind into the next grade, will be done with Jewelcrafting (see Coming soon).

The six elements

There are six elements, one for each Sanctum and the god who watches over it. Any element fits any weapon or armor. The bonuses below are for a Pure shard; Chipped is half and Radiant is double. Percent bonuses are marked with %.

Void-touched shards

Not every fragment of the meteor stayed pure. Around the Ad'rath Scar on Alaroh Island, shards have been touched by the Void. They are the strongest shards in the world, one and a half times a Radiant shard, but each carries a curse.

ElementThe Void's price
FireDefense -3%
WaterStrength -6
EarthStamina Regen -4
AirVitality -6
NatureAttack Power -3%

No going back: the forge cannot remove a Void-touched shard. Only a cleansing ritual in a Cleansing Chamber can purify one into a normal Radiant shard. Every Sanctum has one, and any chamber can cleanse a shard of any element.

Appearance

Love the look of an older piece? Open the Appearance tab to make an item look like another item of the same kind and slot. Plate gloves can look like other plate gloves, and a sword like another sword. Your item keeps its tier, its stats and its shards: only the looks change.

You can choose from the appearances you've collected, which you can browse any time with /collections. Press Restore to bring back the item's original look.
