Bellborough Keep

Belborough Keep is a formidable human fortress built on a rocky island at the western edge of the wetlands. Originally constructed by the Covenant to guard the northern approach to Illdoridri during the First Wars, it served as a critical military stronghold against Dominion incursions from the west and south. Over time, a small town grew around the keep as families of stationed soldiers settled nearby. Today, Belborough stands as both a strategic bastion and a thriving harbor town, offering safe passage and trade in the marshlands leading toward the Scarab Desert.

While the keep maintains a garrison of human soldiers, its primary function is now trade and diplomacy.

Architecture

  • Outer Walls: Colossal fortifications of Living Stone reinforced with iron and runic wards for elemental resistance.
  • Central Keep: Houses command quarters, war council chambers, and the armory.
  • Watchtowers: Equipped with small ballistae and etheric lanterns for night patrols.
  • Dockyards: Expanded over time to accommodate small merchant vessels travelling through the marshes.
  • Town Expansion: Timber-framed houses, cobblestone streets, and a marketplace grew within the courtyard of the keep as families of soldiers settled nearby.

History

  • First Wars: Belborough served as the Covenant’s western bulwark, launching counterattacks against Dominion forces attempting to breach Illdoridri.
  • Cultural Shift: From a fortress of war to a symbol of resilience and prosperity, Belborough became a safe harbor for traders and travelers.
  • Festivals: Hosts the Marshlight Festival, celebrating trade and unity, with lanterns floating across the wetlands.
