Wyrmrest

Wyrmrest is a massive, solitary island of ice and jagged stone, rising out of the frigid waters at the northernmost tip of Illdoridri. Larger than any settlement-bearing island in the region, Wyrmrest resembles a single, towering mountain range jutting straight out of the sea — its peaks lost to blizzards, auroras, and ever-churning storms.

The island is considered one of the most inhospitable places in Aetherion. For centuries, sailors have reported seeing shimmering shapes circling its highest cliffs or hearing deep, resonant growls carried through the icy wind.

Very few have stepped on its shores, and even fewer have returned with their minds intact.

If the stories are true, Wyrmrest was once the domain of the Ice Wyrms, an ancient lineage of primordial dragons said to predate even the gods of Aetherion.

Reaching the Island

Reaching the Island

Wyrmrest lies only a few kilometers off the northern coast, separated from mainland Illdoridri by a narrow but treacherous stretch of frigid sea. Because of its proximity — and the legends of ice wyrms, forgotten power, and ancient secrets — two opposing factions have established forward settlements along the shoreline.

These towns serve as staging grounds, observation posts, and launch points toward the mysterious island. The distance is short, but the journey is perilous - storms, shifting ice, and unnatural currents make the crossing anything but simple.

Greywyn

Greywyn is the Covenant’s primary foothold in the far north. Constructed upon frost‑bitten cliffs overlooking the sea channel to Wyrmrest, the town stands as a symbol of determination and curiosity.

  • Houses Covenant explorers, scholars, and cartographers studying Wyrmrest
  • Strong naval presence, including icebreaker-class ships
  • Architecture blends stone and frostwood timbers, reinforced with wind magic from Avalonian-trained artisans
  • Acts as a supply point for expeditions heading north
  • A harbor lighthouse burns with a perpetual blue flame, said to be blessed by Talasas for safe navigation

Greywyn residents treat Wyrmrest with a mix of reverence and unease. Many swear they’ve seen:

  • Colossal winged silhouettes against northern auroras
  • Ice fragments falling from the sky
  • Glowing blue lights along the island’s slopes

Residents of Greywyn view Wyrmrest as something meant to be understood — not conquered.

Skornhold

Skornhold stands in stark contrast to Greywyn. While the Covenant sees Wyrmrest as a mystery to unravel, the Dominion sees it as an untapped superweapon, a potential fortress, or even a dragonic power source ripe for exploitation.

  • Constructed of blackened iron, volcanic stone, and frozen timber
  • Home to Dragonkin scouts, Dark Dwarven frostforgers, and Orcish war packs
  • A massive signal tower relays messages south toward Daemagan
  • The dockyard is lined with reinforced Dominion warships designed to withstand ice flows
  • The town square contains a shrine dedicated to Asubah, said to protect soldiers venturing toward the forbidden island

Skornhold’s warriors believe:

  • Wyrmrest hides the resting place of an ancient wyrm king
  • The Dominion is destined to claim whatever lies there
  • The Covenant seeks to steal this power first

Many in Skornhold dream of great honor in being the first to set foot onto Wyrmrest’s frozen slopes.

The Alchemists Tower

Nestled in a fractured mountain corridor between the two settlements lies the remains of a once-towering structure known as The Alchemists Tower - a colossal spire that dominated the region before its mysterious fall.
